Exercise is an essential part in just about any physical and wellness activity. It applies even to older adults.  Experts say senior citizens will get as much exposure as possible. When you’re an older person, exercise will allow you to lead a safer, longer life.

There are four main groups, different and specific in each type. Doing so would offer more benefits.

  1. Endurance or aerobic exercise – Dancing, walking briskly, jogging, swimming and climbing stairs.
  2. Flexibility exercise – stretching like shoulder rolls, side reach and stretch and palm squeeze.
  3. Balance exercise – lifting and holding one or more of your extremities at a time and/or the use of props such as weights
  4. Strength exercise – doing push-ups, pull-ups, crunches, leg squats or push-ups against a wall

Many different types of exercises can improve strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance like practicing yoga. Doing so would offer more benefits.

Benefits of Exercise for Older Adults.

If you are an older adult, exercise can help you live a longer, healthier life. They are many benefits of exercising. Not only it gives you energy to last a day but also contributes to longevity adding extra years to your life.

Prevention of disease – As we age, there are diseases that can come into contact with older people. With the aid of exercise not only does it enhance immunity, it helps avoid or postpone diseases such as heart disease, diabetes or osteoporosis.

Improved Mental Health -Improves sleep, Boost mood and self confidence and brain booster. Exercise stimulates the growth of new brain cells and helps prevent age-related declines. Regulate your sleep pattern.

Increased Balance preventing falls – Protects against bone loss restoring bones and contributes to better balance and less fractures. Improves strength and flexibility, which also helps improve balance and coordination and reduces the risk of falls.

Social Engagement – by joining an exercise with group of people or your friends it improves one’s self esteem and also it is a fun social activity. Older adults can  feel a sense of purpose and avoid feelings of loneliness or depression. The key to this is to find a form of exercise that you love.

Increased Life Expectancy – Improves not only their physical fitness, but also their psychological benefits. It can help to relieve the symptoms of depression and improve mood in general. Increased mobility resulting from regular, moderate exercise can help the elderly to retain their independence if it is done on a long-term basis.

Is it really safe for older adults to exercise?

Most adults over 65 years of age are safe to exercise. Even patients with chronic diseases can exercise safely. These include heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and arthritis. Exercise has been shown to prevent disease in the aging population, reduce the risk of falls, improve mental health and well-being, strengthen social ties and improve cognitive function many of these conditions are improved by exercise.

If you haven’t been active, you can start working towards your goal slowly. How much exercise you need depends on your age and health. It’s never too late for seniors to start a regular exercise routine. The key is to find something you enjoy doing, and to start at a level that is easy to maintain. It’s just a matter of making it a priority and a habit in your everyday lives. If you are not sure if the exercise is safe for you or if you are currently inactive, ask your doctor.
